DREAMers Get Deserved Relief from Deportation

At long last, young undocumented immigrants will have a shot at the American dream. We commend the White House for offering temporary relief from deportation to “DREAMers.”

“We are elated! For years we have been saving DREAMers one-by-one from immigration detention and deportation. They are aspiring bankers, engineers, artists, teachers and physicians. We know that their talent will enrich our country,” said Cheryl Little, AI Justice Executive Director. “Kudos to the Obama administration for offering them a path out of the shadows.”

Recently, Cheryl Little wrote a column in the Miami Herald, Rubio proposal offers way toward Dream Act, which argued that the Administration already had the authority to provide DREAMers discretionary relief from deportation. She submitted a legal brief to the White House, Summary Regarding Executive Branch Authority to Grant DREAMers Temporary Relief  (click here to read brief ) describing various options for offering relief. Her efforts did not fall on deaf ears.

In the coming days AI Justice will be helping DREAMers to understand and obtain discretionary relief from deportation. We salute all the DREAMer activists who pushed for this to happen, particularly Gaby Pacheco and Jose Antonio Vargas.
