Chair, The Children’s Movement of Florida
David Lawrence Jr. is a nationally known journalist who retired at 56, subsequently becoming a leading national advocate for children, especially in the area of early childhood learning and investment. The former publisher of The Miami Herald as well as executive editor and publisher of the Detroit Free Press, he now serves as the president of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation.
Mr. Lawrence also chairs The Children’s Movement of Florida, a citizen-led, non-partisan movement to educate political, business and civic leaders — and parents — about the urgent need to make the well-being of children, especially in their earliest years, Florida’s highest priority. He has 12 honorary doctorates and has chaired United Way, the New World School of Arts, the Everglades Foundation and the Foundation for Child Development. He joined the Board of Directors of AI Justice in 2012.
