Americans for Immigrant Justice (AI Justice) seeks a successor to its founding Executive Director to continue its mission of top-notch representation for immigrants through direct services, impact litigation, and policy advocacy. Working with the staff and the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will sustain and expand AI Justice’s work to protect the basic human rights of immigrants and contribute to systemic immigration reforms.
AI Justice’s staff of nearly 60 includes lawyers, paralegals, advocates, and administrative professionals. The Board of Directors comes from a variety of professions and backgrounds, and each is committed to advancing AI Justice’s mission. About half of the organization’s 2021 budget of $5.4M comes from government grants and subcontracts. The rest is comprised of non-government grants, contributions, annual event revenue, and investment income.
As AI Justice prepares for its executive transition, the Board of Directors developed a transitional strategic plan and identified six organizational priorities to be addressed in 2021-2022:
- Continue to provide high quality legal services, through both direct representation and expanded impact litigation.
- Increase AI Justice’s national influence by pursuing greater engagement with national policymakers and advocates.
- Strengthen AI Justice’s development and communications capacities, leveraging AI Justice’s 25th anniversary to generate additional support.
- Raise additional unrestricted funds to support ongoing programs and to expand national efforts.
- Increase the board’s capacity to help with development, communications, and advocacy.
- Successfully transition from AI Justice’s founding Executive Director to a successor.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director should be a passionate and hopeful voice for the immigration community that AI Justice serves, energizing and guiding the agency’s staff in carrying out their daily work and engaging community partners, financial supporters, policy makers, and other stakeholders in taking positive action to strengthen and further protect the due process and human rights of all immigrants, their families, and communities.
Priorities and Responsibilities
- Set and, as needed, shift the goals and priorities for AI Justice against an ever changing legal and political backdrop in consultation with the board, the deputy director, and the program directors; advise on strategy and key decisions in the most vital cases.
- Lead a talented management team and serve as the charismatic and inspirational leader guiding the staff and organization.
- Be a public face and public voice for immigrants and the agency, including via media appearances, op-eds, panel presentations, and meetings with senior government officials.
- Engage in donor cultivation, relationship building, and resource development. Attend and host community events and speaking engagements.
- Oversee programmatic and strategic responsibilities for the organization. The Deputy Director, the Chief Financial Officer, the Development and Marketing Director, and the Litigation Program Director all currently report directly to the Executive Director.
- Attorney, licensed to practice law in any state, active in the legal community, and widely respected by colleagues, preferably with a national profile.
- At least 10 years practicing immigration law, including providing direct services, managing immigration lawyers, and/or engaging in high-level immigration policy advocacy.
- Leadership experience managing a legal services organization or program or otherwise experienced in non-profit management. Committed to leading a purpose and values-driven organization.
- Demonstrated integrity and commitment to justice, with a passion for advancing the rights of immigrants.
- Flexibility and ability to lead an organization that must adapt quickly to an ever changing legal and political environment.
- Established relationships with national funders, demonstrated track record of success in raising resources, and commitment to cultivating donors and shepherding relationships with major funders.
- Meaningful connections to other immigrant rights organizations as well as to policy makers. Committed to building and nurturing those relationships as well as those with other stakeholders.
- Enthusiastic about and committed to working alongside people from diverse cultural, educational, professional, and socioeconomic backgrounds. A demonstrated belief in diversity, inclusion, and equity for all individuals.
- Gifted at public speaking, storytelling, and writing. An excellent communicator.
Additional qualities that would be a plus
- Personal immigrant story or history.
- Spanish or Haitian Creole fluency.
- Member of underrepresented community.
- Experience with planned giving or endowments.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The hiring range is $175,000 to $215,000.
- Generous benefits package, including comprehensive health, vision, and dental coverage; 20 paid days of vacation leave; 13 paid holidays; 10 paid health leave days; and 3% employer contribution to 403(b) retirement plan after 1 year of employment.
