Americans for Immigrant Justice, ACLU Prison Proje Americans for Immigrant Justice, ACLU Prison Project, and ACLU of Florida have filed a lawsuit challenging due process and legal access violations at the Everglades Detention Center, "Alligator Alcatraz." This remote, flood-prone facility, built with the vision to detain 4,000+ immigrants, was constructed in eight days without consideration of the immense cost to human lives, U.S. families, the environment, or taxpayers’ dollars.

The Constitution does not disappear in the Everglades. We are fighting to restore access to counsel, uphold fundamental rights, and bring transparency to this facility.

As immigration enforcement ramps up advocates are As immigration enforcement ramps up advocates are sounding the alarm three months after DHS shuts down three internal oversight offices. At least 11 people have died in ICE custody so far this fiscal year, nearly matching last year’s total. These closures come amid a surge in new detention sites and expanded contracts with private prison companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group. The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected Florida’s re The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected Florida’s request to enforce SB 4-C, a dangerous state law that sought to criminalize the transportation of undocumented individuals.

SB 4-C would have allowed local police to arrest people based on immigration status, an unconstitutional power grab from the federal government. This is a critical victory for immigrant rights and the rule of law.

There is no right to free legal representation in immigration proceedings and without AI Justice, which never charges for its services, countless adults and children without the means to hire an attorney would be forced to navigate our complex immigration system alone, essentially denying them the opportunity for justice.
