This remote, flood-prone facility, built with the vision to detain 4,000+ immigrants, was constructed in eight days without consideration of the immense cost to human lives, U.S. families, the environment, or taxpayers’ dollars. The Constitution does not disappear in the Everglades. We are fighting to restore access to counsel, uphold fundamental rights, and bring transparency to this facility. As immigration enforcement ramps up advocates are As immigration enforcement ramps up advocates are sounding the alarm three months after DHS shuts down three internal oversight offices. At least 11 people have died in ICE custody so far this fiscal year, nearly matching last year’s total. These closures come amid a surge in new detention sites and expanded contracts with private prison companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group.
