New York Times article laid bare the heart-wrenchi New York Times article laid bare the heart-wrenching conditions at Miami's Krome Detention Center, a center designed for 41,000 but crammed with over 56,000 where detainees are subjected to unimaginable suffering. They go on days without showers, lack essential medical care, and are forced to sleep on cold, hard floors. The situation is so dire that it has led to deaths in custody. Our work at AI Justice continues to expose and challenge these harsh conditions. We continue to stand with immigrants, uphold their dignity, and request accountability.

We are delighted to welcome Katie Shepherd, our ne We are delighted to welcome Katie Shepherd, our new National Policy Counsel who has just started her journey with us! A Texas native, Kathryn "Katie" Shepherd started her career as an immigration lawyer in Houston focused on refugee and asylum law. After spending time in South Texas representing detained asylum-seeking mothers and their children, she moved to Washington, DC in July 2016. Katie worked for six years in the non-profit sector driving humane immigration policy and advocacy on behalf of noncitizens in ICE and CBP custody. In 2022, she entered government service as a senior policy advisor within the DHS Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL), where she investigated civil rights abuses within the ICE detention system. She has over 15 years' experience advancing immigrant justice and government accountability through strategic litigation, policy advocacy and oversight. In her free time, you can find her outside with her dog and partner, or in the boxing gym.

In April, AI Justice submitted a report to the Uni In April, AI Justice submitted a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council documenting egregious human rights abuses of immigrants at Krome. 

 The situation has not improved. 

The Miami Herald reported that conditions at Krome remain unbearable, and immigrants are forced to consider returning to their native countries, where many fear persecution, instability, and extreme danger.
