Among those deported was Gerson Joseph, a Florida resident for more than 20 years who is engaged to be married and has a daughter who is a U.S. citizen. Joseph, who turns 40 next week, called his lawyer, Philip Issa, on Wednesday informing him that an officer at the Krome Detention Center in southwest Miami-Dade, where he had been detained since November, informed him he would be deported in the morning.

“I want to say that I’m shocked but I’m not. I’m upset more than anything,” said Issa, an attorney with Americans for Immigrant Justice in Miami.

“Based on what I was reading about Haiti, I couldn’t imagine they could pull this flight off. I didn’t believe it until it actually happened. This administration has not given us any reason to think that it is dealing compassionately with immigrants and so I am upset. I’m disappointed because they are sending him back to a war zone. It’s catastrophic.”

Today, along with 73 other people, our client was deported to Haiti.

He lived in the U.S. for 20 years and has a 7-year-old U.S. citizen daughter. It is heartless to tear apart families & communities to deport our neighbors to the current conditions in Haiti.

Given that the Biden Administration is well aware of the unsafe and dire conditions throughout the country, resuming deportation flights to Haiti is unconscionable and shameful. What will it take for our government to begin valuing Haitian lives?

Some of the associated benefits of TPS include protection from deportation, employment authorization, a social security number, and access to healthcare benefits.

But TPS is not a permanent status and does not have a pathway to citizenship, leaving TPS recipients in a state of uncertainty about their futures. Some TPS holders have lived in the U.S. for decades, but are still at risk of being deported if their country of origin’s TPS designation is terminated. We need a pathway to permanent protections for long term TPS holders and their families. #TPSjustice
