🚨The federal government is offering unaccompani 🚨The federal government is offering unaccompanied migrant children 14 and older $2,500 to “self-deport” back to their countries, according to a memo sent by the Department of Health and Human Services. At Americans for Immigrant Justice, we are deeply concerned by this approach. It is critical to recognize the context in which these decisions are being made: by children, often without legal guidance. 👉Key facts: - What may be framed as a “choice” to leave is often made without full understanding of legal rights. - There is no guaranteed right to an attorney in immigration court—even for children. - Immigration law is incredibly complex, and expecting a minor to navigate it alone and in a language they do not speak is wholly unrealistic. Americans for Immigrant Justice is the only legal service provider for children housed in shelters under the jurisdiction of the Miami immigration court. 💜Our team is actively conducting visits to every facility where we represent unaccompanied minors. During these visits, we are ensuring each child understands their legal rights and available options. Children need us now more than ever.
