On November 17th-19th, AI Justice co-sponsored the National Immigrant Integration Conference, organized by the Knight Foundation and the Florida Immigrant Coalition, which drew hundreds of immigration policy makers and advocates to Miami.
AI Justice helped kick off the conference by co-hosting with FL Dream and Students Working for Equal Rights (SWER), the Miami Immigration Experience: Past Successes & Today’s Challenges. Conference participants gathered at the Freedom Tower for a traditional Cuban meal and a discussion led by advocates, immigrant youth and leaders in Miami’s immigrant rights community about immigration. Panelists led a lively discussion about how from Operación Pedro Pan to Miami’s DREAMer movement, young immigrants in Miami have been a formative force in the history of Miami and in the momentum of the national immigrant rights movement. Following the discussion, participants enjoyed an exhibition of works by renowned Cuban artist Antonia Eiriz. At the close of the evening, attendees participated in the creation of a piece of original collaborative art inspired by the groups’ discussion.
