"As Executive Director, I am excited to build upon our founding mission, seek expanded spaces for our local, state and national presence, and serve as a counterbalance to injustice," said Sui. "I am honored to lead our talented and dedicated staff so they may continue flourishing in their crucial work and empowering the voices of some of the most vulnerable within our communities. Whether seeking family unity and safety, fighting for protections from violent crimes and trafficking, seeking due process and preservation of immigrants’ status, or recognizing basic human rights, together, in solidarity with immigrants and other strong advocates, we affirm our pursuit of justice."
Cat Walker, Supervising Attorney of AI Justice's D Cat Walker, Supervising Attorney of AI Justice's Detention Program, and client Jean Paul participated in the Human Rights Clinic of Miami's Annual Symposium, raising awareness among medical school students about the unique barriers to physical and mental healthcare for people navigating the U.S. immigration system. Jean Paul shared his experience with systemic racism and medical neglect upon being detained by ICE in Florida after experiencing extreme violence in Haiti. To the medical students in attendance, Jean Paul said, "You have the power to make a difference. You can help people like me not just survive, but thrive. Your skills, knowledge, and compassion could be the key to someone’s freedom. You can provide evaluations and testimonies that could save a life. You can help bring light to the darkness that many of us have known." A huge thank you to Cat and Jean Paul for their invaluable insight, and thank you to @umlawhrc for having us!
We are thrilled to welcome Anne Janet “A.J.” H We are thrilled to welcome Anne Janet “A.J.” Hernandez Anderson as Director of the Pro Bono Program at Americans for Immigrant Justice! A.J. started her career in 2005 representing clients in all types of immigration cases and matters. She then gained extensive litigation experience in private practice working with a union-side law firm and small litigation firm handling a variety of litigation matters. Most recently, A.J.’s work with the Southern Poverty Law Center placed her at the forefront of several policy and outreach campaigns and coalitions that developed into impact litigation cases challenging anti-immigrant laws such as Florida’s SB 168 and SB 1718, the constitutionality of immigration detainers, and wage theft by H-2A labor contractors. Throughout her career, A.J. has strived to work in community to develop strategies that are responsive to client and community needs. A.J. was born in Mexico, grew up in Austin, Texas, graduated with a B.A. from Wesleyan University, and earned her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School. Welcome to the team, A.J.!

By the time he could finally apply for DACA, a Texas federal court had blocked new applications. He’s lived in Texas for more than 20 years and KFT would bring long-awaited relief for him and his family. Natalie is a 9th grade biology teacher in Texas, hoping for more freedom for her and Oscar to make the life choices they dream of. “Receiving Keeping Families Together Parole would be transformative for Oscar and me. It would allow us the freedom to make decisions and change our life to follow our passions. Oscar could get a work permit and find a job, which would make it possible for me to go back to school to get an advanced degree to pursue a career in science.” #KeepingFamiliesTogether

“Keeping Families Together Parole would be a bea “Keeping Families Together Parole would be a beacon of hope for my family. It would allow me to continue to work as an attorney and contribute to my community by doing what I love. It would allow me to pursue even bigger dreams of serving as an attorney for the federal government, including as an Assistant U.S. Attorney.” Foday is a prosecutor originally from Sierra Leone, who fled because of war. He’s lived in the U.S since he was seven and hopes to keep his family together through this new parole process. Jaxhiel is a medical assistant and primary caregiver to her mother. This parole process would allow her husband to stay in U.S., continue raising their son and supporting each other. #KeepingFamiliesTogether
On Monday, a federal judge issued an administrativ On Monday, a federal judge issued an administrative stay on the Keeping Families Together parole program, also referred to as Parole in Place (or PIP). Under the stay, which was initially granted for 14 days, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can accept, but not approve, parole applications submitted as part of the Keeping Families Together program. This temporary pause is a result of ongoing litigation challenging the program, brought by Florida and fifteen other states. The lawsuit claims, in part, that the state of Florida will be irreparably harmed by the new program, but data shows the extensive contributions of immigrants to Florida’s economy. In Florida, there are an estimated 27,000 undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens potentially eligible for Keeping Families Together parole. If these individuals were able to adjust status, they would add an estimated $317 million to the national economy and pay a combined $110 million in taxes annually. It is believed that 88% of these individuals are currently in the labor force in Florida, with 76% working in industries with staffing shortages. In short, these individuals are crucial to maintain a thriving economy in Florida. Overall, immigrants living in Florida have a large positive impact on our economy—paying an estimated $42.5 billion in taxes and bringing in $141.5 billion in spending power to the state. In Miami-Dade County alone, immigrants paid $8.9 billion in taxes and brought in $28.2 billion in spending power. Providing lawful status and work authorization to up to 500,000 PIP-eligible spouses of U.S. citizens could positively impact over a million American family members and the economy by allowing long-time residents of the U.S. with strong family ties the ability to more fully contribute to the communities in which they are already deeply embedded. Florida stands to gain from this new program.
