Reports of ‘atrocious’ treatment of immigrant children in the United States grow – World Nation News

“Immigrant advocates in the United States filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denouncing the continuing abuse and ‘appalling treatment’ of immigrant children, Americans for Immigrant Justice (AI Justice) reported Thursday.

The humanitarian group lamented that the irregularities reported by 70% of the children they interviewed in 2021 continue, who ‘reported experiencing conditions or abuse’ while in the custody of the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

‘Children suffer mistreatment in the form of excessive detention, verbal and physical abuse, deprivation of medical care, lack of adequate food and water, being subjected to unreasonably cold temperatures without access to blankets, family separation and other human rights violations.

‘AI Justice and other organizations have been denouncing the abuse and egregious treatment of immigrant children at the hands of CBP for years, but nothing has changed,’ Jennifer Anzardo Valdés, director of AI Justice[‘s Children’s Legal Program], said in a statement.

The organization said it filed the complaint with the DHS Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties on Wednesday detailing ‘patterns of abuse and mistreatment of immigrant children.’

The complaint coincides with others from other humanitarian groups such as Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) and Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project (FIRRP), which represent unaccompanied non-citizen children throughout the country.”
