An investigation at Florida’s Baker County Deten An investigation at Florida’s Baker County Detention Center found a pattern of extreme medical neglect, including undertreatment, incorrect treatment, and failure to attend to medical conditions, with life-threatening consequences for immigrants detained at the facility.

Individuals detained at Baker have endured appalling conditions and abuses for years, with over 140 complaints filed since 2020.

In order to protect people from further harm, the federal government must immediately terminate its contract with Baker County, fully close Baker County Detention Center, and release all people detained at Baker to their communities and loved ones.

At its core, SB 1718 is a cruel and far-reaching a At its core, SB 1718 is a cruel and far-reaching anti-immigration bill that aims to stoke fear and make life in Florida more difficult not only for undocumented immigrants but also their families, employers, friends, doctors, and anyone else who interacts with them.

Rather than passing legislation that protects and empowers Floridians, the Florida Legislature has passed this bill which will have devastating effects on all people living in our state by criminalizing immigrants, American Citizens who support them, and Florida businesses that employ them.

Florida has a proud history of welcoming immigrants, and our future prosperity depends on continuing down a path of welcome for Florida’s 4.5 million immigrant residents and for all those who seek safety, opportunity, work, and family reunification in the Sunshine State.

Keep an eye on our website and social media as we continue to distribute resources to educate our community on what SB 1718 entails, how to protect yourself and your loved ones, and what you can do to advocate against anti-immigrant laws in Florida and beyond.

We are heartbroken by the reported death of Angel We are heartbroken by the reported death of Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza, a child detained by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in a Florida facility. Since this child’s death, the government has not released a single statement. This child’s family and the public should know what happened to this young person while he was in government custody. We call for an immediate, independent, and accountable investigation into the circumstances of this child’s passing. As a society we have an obligation to protect the safety and well-being of all children, including those who are seeking refuge in this country. Our hearts go out to the child's family, who are undoubtedly experiencing unimaginable grief and loss.

There is no right to free legal representation in immigration proceedings and without AI Justice, which never charges for its services, countless adults and children without the means to hire an attorney would be forced to navigate our complex immigration system alone, essentially denying them the opportunity for justice.
